Why SA's price jumped at 18:35 on 13 August, in five steps.

From the spike to the rule that tells you about the next one, all in supagrid.

  1. 01

    The price jumps

    At 18:35 SA's price went from $86.00 to $1,240.00/MWh, while Victoria's stayed at $84.00.

  2. 02

    The link is full

VIC–SA had been at its 650 MW import limit since 17:55, so SA could draw no more from Victoria.

  3. 03

    Who set the price

With the link full, the next megawatt came from inside SA. The SA gas peaker supplied it, at 142 of its 150 MW, and its offer set the price.

  4. 04

    Test a change

Rerun the day with a 150 MW battery at Adelaide. SA's price at 18:35 would have been $410.00, not $1,240.00.

  5. 05

    Hear it first next time

A rule on SA's price sends the next spike to your inbox as it happens, and to the morning's email digest.
