Every number, with its source and its date.

supagrid starts from the Australian Energy Market Operator's public data. Most of what you see is derived, modelled, mapped and connected by supagrid on top of it. Every figure says which it is.

Illustrative numbers

AEMO's data is the start. Most of supagrid is built on top of it.

Public data alone doesn't say how loaded a line is, what a farm lost or what the network looked like last winter. That work is ours.

  • It starts with AEMO

The market's own public record of prices, dispatch, units, the network and its constraints, live and back through history.

  • Derived

Figures computed from that record with a fixed formula, such as how hard a line is running, what a unit captured and what it lost.

  • Modelled

What nobody publishes, such as flows on lines with no published flow, load at every substation, the market rerun and a project's returns.

  • Mapped

The network drawn line by line, and placed by hand where the public record falls short, then checked by rule.

  • Connected

Every unit tied to its substation, every constraint to the lines it limits and every outage to its line, in one graph.

  • Kept as it stood

Each part of that graph carries the dates it was in force, so any past evening reads as the network was then.

The NEM, live and through history.

  • The five NEM regions

Queensland, New South Wales with the ACT, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. Western Australia and the Northern Territory sit outside the NEM.

  • Live and history on one clock

Every five minutes of the market, from now back through history, read the same way.

  • The network as it stood

Lines, substations and units as they stood on each day, so a past evening reads as it was.

  • Every registered unit

Generators, batteries and large loads, with the projects queued to connect.

Every figure says how it was made.

Each figure wears its tier in words, and a Modelled one wears the flask too, wherever it appears, whether on the map, in a panel or in the Analyst's answers. Open any dotted label to see what the figure measures and how it was made.

Derived
Computed by us with a fixed formula, so the same inputs always give the same answer.
Modelled
A methodology choice is embedded, so a reasonable person could compute it differently.
FlowModelled

The power on a line where no flow is published, in its direction of flow.

Illustrative numbers

The map is checked against its sources, by rule.

Every line, substation and unit on the map is checked against the sources by rule, not by hand, and checked again as new data arrives. Each one says how sure supagrid is of it.

Drawn as fact
The sources confirm it.
Proposed
Supported, but not yet confirmed.
Contested
The sources disagree, and the map says so.

Where a value isn't held, supagrid shows a gap and says so. It never fills one with a guess.

Tested against history, and published after a test on unseen data.

The Backcast replays the real market beside what happened, so you can judge how close the model gets. Accuracy figures are published only after a test on data the model never saw.
